is it safe to use driftwood for parrot / macaw perches?
i was out walking my dog the other day on the beach and i found some nice big bits of drifwood that i thought i could use as perches for my blue and gold macaw. the drifwood i found looks very much like the java wood you can buy from the shops. i soaked the wood in my bath tub for around 12 hours or more in fresh water with a small amount of bleach and have oven baked them for 30 mins at 150deg. is this sufficient or do/can you reccomend i do anything else before i put them in my birds cage or use them in part of his play gym????
Hi, I dont think you will have any worries if you soak & bake for a lot longer.I would soak in clean warm water for at least a week, I would then bake on low for at least 48 hrs. That way you are sure you have soaked away any chemical residue or anything. The baking also sterilizes & also kills any bugs eggs.
Lemon Juice is a great disinfectant too & not at all poisonous.
