please help, my little brother has a 1-1/2 year old blood-parrot fish, and it has apparently developed some black patches while we away [for 3 weeks] on vacation (the fish was left with a neighbor). when we came back it had only about a half-tank of water (he has about a 1-2 gallon starter tank). he is _very_ distressed about his poor little fish, and says he sees some small parts of the top fin breaking off. can anybody help, is this normal?
I have 2 blood parrot fish and mine had some black patches a little while ago. I looked this up online and read that it is very common for this type of fish. Black patches are caused by poor water quality or stress. Your brother's is probably suffering from both. There isn't really a cure for the patches, they just go away on there own once the problems causing them are solved.
As everyone else is saying, his tank is WAY to small to house a blood parrot fish. Unless he is planning to upgrade to a 20 gallon or more right now, I would suggest getting rid of him. Take him back to a store or give him a way. In a 1-2 gallon tank, you could try housing a betta fish. They are beautiful and will be happy in your tank.
