Parrots can be picky eaters, the greater part their diet consists of seeds, nectar, pollen, buds, fruit, and sometimes insects. Some parrots will resist eating something new but this is considered as a common trait among these birds.
The parrot's large and powerful bill is used to open and consume seeds. All parrots for the exception of the Pesquet's Parrot make use of the this method to get the seed from the shell; the seed is held between the parrots upper mandibles (the birds beak) and it is the lower mandible crushes the shell, at which point the seed is rotated in the bill and the remaining shell is removed. To help hold the large seeds in his mouth a parrot will sometimes use his foot.
For a parrot's body to function properly the owner needs to make sure that the food he is eating is providing the right nutrients. No one really has determined an optimal diet for the parrot or what type of diet actually keeps them healthy. That doesn't mean you should submit to the easiest method and feed your parrot only a commercially premixed seed product.
An all seed only diet is lacking in a number of essential nutrients, they don't possess a sufficient amount of calcium and phosphorus proportion. This leads to a calcium deficiency. Also you won't find much vitamin (A) in a plain seed mixture, vitamin (A) is essential to the bird's immune system.
The same goes for feeding your parrot strictly a pellet diet; that is not the answer either. Protein levels in some parrots are actually too high when they are fed a pellet-only diet. The most important thing to know is that seeds do not even come close to providing the proper protein requirements a parrot needs.
Vitamin and mineral supplements are also recommended in a parrot's diet to keep them in good health. Consult with your avian veterinarian about which vitamin and mineral supplements would be best.
You should be feeding your parrot two meals a day and the best times for that are right after dawn or at least no later than 8 a.m. then and again about an hour or so before dusk sets in. If you develop the habit of feeding your parrot at these times which are close to his natural foraging times, you'll find out that he will more eagerly accept the foods and eat them with more enjoyment.
Parrots have different nutritional requirements depending the species and individual bird. When feeding a parrot it is not as straightforward as feeding your pet dog or cat. A parrot's diet should be a variety of food and should be introduce gradually.
- Vegetables such as; broccoli, spinach, kale, chard, peas, string beans, corn, carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, squash, peppers
- Fruits like; apples, papayas, cherries, apricots, kiwi fruit, mangos, melons, pineapple, pears, bananas, grapes, or pomegranates.
- Nuts (unsalted only), and peanuts (should be unsalted but not raw in the shells, since the shells may contain a fungus toxic to parrots).
- A variety of high quality seed mixture, and high quality pellets.
- And yes "people foods" such as hard-boiled or scrambled eggs (with no seasoning) pasta, rice and beans which could be garbanzo beans, lentils, soy beans, pinto beans, red kidney beans, split peas as well as white kidney beans.
So as you see a parrot's diet involves dedication on the owners' part from purchasing, preparing and serving meals to their parrot so they do not suffer from nutritional deficiencies. You should avoid foods that are highly processed and that contain salt, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, artificial colorings, and flavors. Make sure you are feeding your parrot food that is appropriate for the species.
The fact that residual pesticides are very harmful to birds, if at all possible their food should be organic. Wow! Maybe if we ate the food we are feeding our parrots we would be a lot healthier also! What do you think?
