african gray toys my bird likes his peanut toy but he will not eat his pellets and when i take it away he gets?
i need to know what kind of interactive toy to buy for my african gray that will not keep him from eating his food pellets
As long as your bird understands that pellets are food, you can safely take away his peanut toy and wait him out. Greys are smart and really stubborn.
If you withhold the toy, he will eventually give in and eat his pellets anyway, just don't offer him anything else to eat. You should not let him go without other foods beyond the first three days. If after three days, he's still refusing the pellets, then he really doesn't understand that they are food, or the pellets don't taste "right" and perhaps they are stale or a "bad batch."
It also depends on what type of pellet you are offering. Harrison's High Potency, and Power Treats are both excellent choices for a Grey, not all pellets are the same. Some contain artificial colourings and flavourings that some Greys do not like. Harrison's pellets are organic (no additives or preservatives) and the majority of African Greys like them once they taste them.
When feeding a pelleted diet, you should only offer about 10 coarse pellets at one time. When there is too much available, parrots get choosy and some get downright picky. So, don't put too much in his bowl at one time.
