I have a Macaw and it's destroyed its perches before. I would just keep on wasting money buying new ones but the problem is when I hook on the screw/washer onto the cage, it eventually breaks the wires. So I just need a large perch to jam in between the cage openings; it's worked okay in the past. Anyone have any suggestions? I already tried looking at petco and petsmart but they don't offer what I need.
Shaving a stick sounds nice but the sticks found outside are generally too weak. The macaw's beak is powerful and it'll destroy most branches with ease. Jamming the branch works well depending on the type of branch. And even if I did have a higher quality cage... okay, where do I get the stick? Remember, it's a big bird. Some li'l stick just ain't gonna do it.
The best perches are the real ones found outside on your nearest tree. As soon as I buy a new bird cage, I usually throw out the plastic perches that come with it. Since my new house came with some dead old trees in the backyard, I cut down a few big branches off and tranform them into perches for my parakeets cages. My parakeets love the real things instead of the plastic ones. The real branches also last longer plus as a bonus, I nearly have an endless supply of them!
