Hi. My baby grey is developing a reddish colored right claws. The other left leg looks completely normal. Why does this happen??? She is outside her cage when i am not at work. I have given her thick rope perches tied from one end of the room to other in a zigzag fashion. Once in cage she starts scraping the bottom of a cage like a hen with one leg. After sometime she gets comfortable and goes back to her thick wooden perch. Otherwise she is recovering from a small beak injury and because of that i am feeding her twice a day. Her activities are getting back to normal after that injury. I tried looking for articles on red colored claws for grey parrots. I couldn't find any.. Can somebody suggest me what to do? I consulted with a vet who asked me to apply a medicine called 'betnovate-n'. It is an oinment used for human skin care. I am scared whether the bird might lick the medicine.??Is it the right thing to do anyways.??
Your birds activities are perfectly normal. All birds will scratch around and root like a chicken. It is because this is how they sometimes find food. It has nothing to do with nesting. The betnovate cream is a topical steroid cream that reduces redness, itching and swelling. The vet must think your birds condition would be helped by using this cream. But a little advice in case he didn't tell you. Use it no longer than 2 weeks at a time. Stop the use for 1 week, then continue for 2 weeks. So 2 weeks on, 1 week off. At work I have had to use it for many different reasons. Some times it works, sometimes it doesn't. Just use a very small amount on your bird. It will not hurt him. I can't tell you if it is the right thing to do or not, since I can't see your bird. I would go with what your vet told you. It could be something that could take awhile to clear up Please read my profile.
