Bird watcher is a term that really does not do justice to those who are involved in the activity. A watcher might be someone like me. I have not put out any feeders or made any other attempt to attract birds and yet as this is written. My wife and I have been watching a trio of hawks amuse themselves chasing squirrels in our yard. While it has been an interesting and enjoyable experience I will make no record of what we saw or when we saw it.
Bird watcher might also refer to a second stage watcher. Someone who spends a great deal of time and perhaps money to attract birds so they can enjoy the simple pleasure of watching and listening to these wonders of nature. These folks may or may not wish to compile a record of their experiences. However it would be no surprise to find they have dozens of photographs of the birds they have witnessed.
Once the second stage has been reached it is but a small step to the third stage which is the almost professional bird watcher. While these people are considered amateurs only because they do not get paid for their activity, some of them become extremely knowledgeable about birds and their habits. To strength this knowledge and also to keep a record of where they have been and what they have seen they will prepare a journal or record of their findings. This journal might be as simple as a wire bound note book listing the type of bird sighted, the location and time of day they were discovered and perhaps some information about the weather or something much more complex.
The more academic of the crowd might include sketches and detailed notes of the birds activities and other information. Most of these journals most likely remain as no more than a prized possession of it's owner. However some of these journals have evolved into scholarly printed works. One example is "Ask for Birdman: The Record-Breaking Attempt to Sight 700 Species of North American Birds Within One Year published by McGraw-Hill. Another example might be "Birdwatcher's Three-Year Record Book" by John Hills. Whether these books began as simply a device for the author to record their experiences or perhaps with the idea of ending with a published book, they are still foremost bird watcher's record books.
The bird watcher's record book is not to be confused with a bird watcher's guide. A guide is, as the name suggests, a book or pamphlet that offers information on where one might find certain bird types. These are furnished as a finished information product. The bird watcher's record on the other hand is a hand written "journal of discovery".
