Heat treatment is a process used in industries and in the process of refining metals for commercial and domestic use. Metals and their alloys are subjected to differing treatments to yield different properties. Technology and its needs warrant stronger metals than can be naturally found, and it is not always cheap to dig for metals with these dominant properties. We would have to combine the properties of two or more metals in an effort to combine the potentials that make them wanted. We have been using heat to weld metals for a long time, and heat treatment goes a step further. Metals are heated to a certain temperature and allowed to cool down for the desired results.
The process is widely used by all kinds of manufacturers of metallic products to obtain the desired content from metals available for use. The property of induction is used to melt metals which is stirred using a magnetic field. This ensures that the molten metal is mixed properly. The growing demand for strong and sturdy metals has led to the use of heat treatment in producing stronger metals than ever before.
The process of annealing is another subsidiary of the process. It involves heating the metal to a certain temperature and letting it cool down. This way, the metal becomes a bit softer. Its ductility is taken care of, and not compromised on.
Ageing is the process corollary to heat treatment whereby the changes that a metal undergoes by virtue of the changes in the weather conditions are taken care of. Metals do undergo some changes in structure and shape as and when the weather and temperature changes. This is also known as precipitation hardening. A significant increase in stress levels is the result when metals are heated to specific temperatures.
Tempering involves the hardening and toughening of metals. Tempering is used to harden glass as well as alloys.
The entire process plays an important part in metallurgy and metallurgical processes. They aim at unearthing the physical and chemical properties of metals to reap the most benefits from them.
Solution heat treatment is the process whereby the liquid form of metals is maintained by rapid quenching. They are then subject to low temperatures. The temperature of the furnace where it is heated is to be maintained at 5 degrees Celcius for most metals.
The process of heat treatment involves high temperatures to dissolve precipitates. The immediate cooling that follows does not leave any chance of re-precipitation. When a few metals like iron and titanium alloys are subjected to extremely high temperatures, they transform into a completely different crystal structure. If the metal is let to cool at a considerable slow pace, it would result in a softening of the metal rather than hardening of the same. This is the principle adopted in the annealing process.
Softening of the metal increases its ductility. One of the advantages of the process is that it enhances the ductility of metals. Another could be that it changes the appearance of metals. When gypsum, a snow-white and translucent metal, is put through the process of heat treatment, it emerges as opaque, like marble. The treatment could also be used to increase the value of some precious stones. It has been in vogue to improve or change the colour of gems for centuries. Smoky quartz looks like citrine or topaz when the process is applied. Yellow topaz becomes pink. The change in colour almost always depends on the temperature to which the stone is heated and the duration of heating.
The strength of glass is seen to increase as much as six fold when the process is applied. For this glass sheets are tempered at about 650 degrees Celsius followed by immediate cooling. The glass shatters in to blunt granules when it does break. The process is easily done at several commercial centres across the world, and we could have it done for you at the least costs.
