When you own a parrot there are several things that you will need to consider to ensure that you get the most from your pet and that they have a happy life. Many people think that parrots are boring and that they simply sit on the perch all day doing nothing. If you train your parrot well then they can perform some great tricks as well as talk. This can keep you and your family amused for hours and you will be amazed at how much your parrot can learn.
You will need to establish a good relationship with your parrot and if you hand feed them then the training will be easier for you. You have to gain your parrots trust as they will respond well to someone they love and trust. You must never shout or hit your parrot as this will simply destroy all trust it has with you. If you parrot has misbehaved which it is likely to do at some point then you should sternly say no. If your parrot begins to squawk loudly then place it back in its cage and cover it.
Parrots are very intelligent and they will soon learn that this is no way to behave, as with any animal a reward scheme works better than getting angry. You should always have some form of treat for your parrot so that when they do something you like you can reward them straight away.
The first few commands may take some time to master so you will need to be patient. Once your parrot understands what is expected of them then they will love learning new things.
One of the first things you need to teach your parrot is how to step onto your hand. You need to gently place your hand into the parrot's cage. The first few times the parrot may back away. You have to keep trying until they are happy with your hand in there and then gently push against their tummy whilst telling it "up" or "step up". Slowly your parrot will understand and hop onto your hand and this will be the first stage mastered. Once you have taught this to your parrot you will both feel more comfortable and willing to learn more.
Many people have parrots because of their ability to talk and this can cause you hours of fun teaching your parrots words. Remember though that not all parrots do in fact talk so don't be upset if yours doesn't want to speak. You should start will simple words and then wait to see if they mimic you (be careful what you say around your parrot). They will often copy noises such as the telephone or doorbell. If they do then this is a good sign that they will be able to talk.
The best age to teach your parrots is around six months old and the training sessions should be kept short. Your parrot is very likely to lose interest if you try to hard so short sessions are better for you both. After you have tried some lessons then it is time to play with your parrot.
