I have an 8 week old shih tzu. Is it normal for him to play, then get up & go sleep his pen throughout the day?
He has his own room that has his exercise pen in it. His bed, food and toys are also in there. He will wake up at 5am to be let out of his room (we leave the pen door open) and will want to play until we leave for work. When we come home we hug and play with him for the first 30 minutes we are home he will then follow us around or lay at our feet or on the couch with us. When he has to use the bathroom he will run into his room on his pad and then come back in the living room but sometime he will play and lay with us and then just get up and go in his room alone for an hour or so. Is that normal or is he unhappy or something?
puppies are infants. They just don't wear diapers and can feed themselves. But you can expect them to behave the same way: eat, sleep, play, poop, repeat. He's normal. Since this is where he spends the majority of his life he will naturally retreat there when he's tired or overwhelmed and just wants some peace.
Do yourselves a favor and him a favor and ditch the potty pads and train him to go outdoors only. By putting the pads in his room you are breaking the taboo his mother taught him, "don't soil your nest!" You are teaching him to both purposely soil his nest and purposely soil indoors, which often makes for a lot of house training confusion later on.
