I have a 2 year old Border Collie. I'm interested in getting her into flyball but she doesn't want play with any toys or bite anything. When I toss a ball or toy she just stares at where I threw it and looks back at me. Or when I just leave them on the floor she just ignores it.
She's interested in running and chasing me though...
Sometimes when I toss treats to her and she catches them, I toss a ball sometimes and she catches it... is that a bad thing to do to her?
Hey you really don't want a dog that chews! Chewing is done because a dog is anxious and bored ( or teething...but anxious still because of the pain)and clearly your dog is not anxious/fearful.
What you are doing tossing a treat, then sometimes a ball is great training, you need to make a big fuss of her when she catches the ball another thing to use instead is a beany toy to treach her to catch cleanly, it stays in the air a little longer than a tennis ball and dogs tend to love them ( never leave a beany toy with her to play with as she will rip it and the beans are plastic).
Another way as well is to buy yourself a 'my toy' I would suggest a tennis ball on a rope, it is a toy you get her interested in by throwing it between two people, what she will do is watch, then hopefully run between the two people to try to get it, it is important that you don't let her get it at first, so the idea is to stop her from getting it if it is dropped, do this as often as you can for a couple of weeks and as soon as you finish put it away in your pocket, it is NEVER left down for her to play with. Once she shows any interest in it, then play tug with her, throw it for her, but ALWAYS pick it up and put it away. This toy will become very important to her, because it belongs to you and it always means fun.
You want to do FlyBall, so another trick to help is: put a treat in your hand and use a high value treat ( like cheese or a tiny piece do cooked liver), NO SPEAKING at all. close your hand with treat in it and hold it under her nose, let her sniff, move your hand around to encourage her to sniff it, she will sniff, probably nose your hand, then lift her paw and try to scratch your hand to get the treat, as soon as she touches your hand with her paw, open hand and let her have the treat. Do this several times without saying anything, until she touches your hand each time first...........now when she touches it say "touch" good girl..........then move on to treat in hand, say touch and see if she understands. Once she understands 'touch' and can do it everytime, you can just put your hand in front of the FlyBall box peddle and say touch, so she will ge the idea very quickly.
You now have the skills to teach her FlyBall and before she even sees a FlyBall course and box..............happy FlyBalling!
