Poodles have acquired a reputation as yappy little nuisances. This could not be further from the truth. Poodles were developed more or less at the same time in Russia, Germany, and France. They were primarily used as water dogs.

Part of Poodles' PR problem is the hair. The exaggerated cut most poodles are put in is called the Continental Clip. The original reason for the clip was to protect the head, chest, joints, and other important parts of the body from the very cold water while cutting away the hair that would be of no use. That hair would just add weight to the dog when he was swimming through the water with a duck in his mouth. The little pom on the tail made it easier to see a dog swimming back heavily laden with a duck. Further, the hair was cut about an inch long instead of the big hair Poodles wear now.

Poodles come in three sizes. Standard Poodles are not as common now, but they are the original size. Technically, any Poodle over 15 inches at the withers, or shoulder, is a standard. Practically, most standards are between 22-28 inches tall. Males are taller than females.

Miniature Poodles are between 11-15 inches. This size can do agility, obedience, conformation, and tracking, but is too small to retrieve a duck. They do retrieve quail and dove well. They are small enough that it is hard for them to see birds fall after they are shot, or to bust through grass and weeds to get through a hunting area. Miniatures are also vulnerable to coyotes and other predators. If you live in the country, you must be very vigilant to protect them.

Toy Poodles are under 11 inches. These dogs can do agility, obedience, conformation, tracking, and fly ball, but not hunting. They are vulnerable to hawks and owls, coyotes, and bigger dogs. Because these dogs are small, people tend to carry them around like toys and fail to train them. This is a serious error as the smart dog will soon be running the house.

There are various terms some breeders and owners use for other sizes. "Royal" Poodles, "teacup" Poodles, parti-colored Poodles. These are all terms that are made up. The only three sizes Poodles come in are toy, miniature and standard. Anything else is a marketing gimmick.

When you watch the Westminster Kennel Club show, or the Eukanubia show, remember that the Poodles you see are descendants of hunting dogs. They deserve respect and love. That love should include obedience training, housebreaking, and an expectation that they behave. Poodles are not yappy nuisances unless their owners make them that way.
