BUGDIE TRAINING iMPORTANT QUESTION!?
I have a budgie named minty. He is very idiotic and hes a total copy cat. when my other budgie, rainbow, started going through a masturbating phase, rainbow would bite me, so whenever minty saw that rainbow would make a chirping noise before he bit me, he started copying him, and now he's doing the same. rainbow doesn't masturbate anymore, but that's because i took away the toy, now, rainbow has eased up. he does occasionally do those buzzing noises, but im working on it and hes a lot sweeter. anyways, about minty, whenever i put my hand in the cage he does a chirping noise then bites me hard. i heard you should never grab a bird cause they get scared, so if hes not tame yet, what should i do. can somebody tell me exactly how to make him get comfortable around me and how to make him trust me and stop biting me because i love him, but the biting thing is pretty annoying, and it has got to stop.! please and thanks. please dont answer like "i dunno... hope that helps" thats annoying!!!!
Most people actually train their birds to bite them without realizing they did it. Most people get bit once and pull away. That automatically tells your bird that he just needs to bite you and you will leave him alone. With other birds, you may get bit, pull away and make a loud noise which becomes exciting to the bird so it is now reinforced again. Some people get bit and put the bird away - which sometimes the bird wants in the first place so yet again, it's reinforced its biting behaviour.
Target training can work great with a biting bird because it lets them bite without hurting you! Since they are merely touching the end of an object.
I would suggest target training your bird and possibly clicker conditioning it so it begins to associate you with fun and reward. This will completely sidetrack the bird from his normal biting behaviour and should begin to phase it out.
One rule I always tell people (especially when they're around my own birds) is to never ever pull away when you get bit. Don't pull away, don't react at all. The bird needs to learn it doesn't do anything so that they don't bother to do it.
