Breeding quality gouldian finches can be quite easy when carried out properly in a controlled environment. There are two main methods of breeding gouldians. Colony breeding and selective breeding. Firstly colony breeding is where all the birds are kept together in a single bird room. The birds have the freedom of choosing who their mate will be. This method is far from being great. A gouldian might choose a mate with the same blood line (a sibling or parent) which should really be avoided. Some breeders think that if they have more pairs together to breed the overall total of offspring these birds will produce will be greater. This is not the case. Gouldians are often less productive when overcrowded as they are exposed to more stress. Stress is a huge problem with overcrowding gouldian finches and their health becomes an issue.

When different types of gouldians are all housed together their offsprings genetics will be unknown as this produces too many possible genetic variations in the head color in normals (The standard color gouldian) or the breast color if the mutation for white breast is present in some gouldians. Here is an example why colony breeding should only be used for normal gouldians with out any mutations present. The white breast genetics in gouldians is only carried in a bird with a visible white breast. If the white breast is not visible in a gouldian the bird can be either split for white breast or the recessive white gene is not present at all. This is a big problem for a gouldian finch breeder who will be selling their gouldian finches. They can not guarantee a bird that does not have a visible white breast as being a split white breasted gouldian.

I will only breed my white breasted gouldians using selective breeding. My gouldians genetics are all documented and easily identified. Each individual bird has their own unique numbered and colored closed leg ring or leg band. Every bird I have in my aviary is recorded and documented on a database. The selective cages I use to breed my mutation gouldian finches only have one side with a wire front which I mount an external breeding box on with a 7cm or 2 1/2 inch round hole in it. The gouldians can access their nest box easily by standing on a short wooden dowel mounted to the breeding box below the entrance hole. I like to pre fill the nest box with a swamp grass first and also provide the pair of gouldians with extra swamp grass in a wire holder to fill the rest of the box up to their satisfaction if they choose to. The male is in charge of the nest building with the gouldian finch.
