Traditionally, broody hens are the best egg incubators for the fertilized egg. But constant monitoring and care of hens are needed to ensure the optimal development of eggs, thus artificial incubators prove to be very helpful and equally efficient. Here are some easy steps towards making your very own chicken incubators. Not only are they cost-effective, it also proves to be a fulfilling learning experience.
First, you have to provide the body of the incubator. The best materials for this are discarded appliances such as microwaves as they are designed to be airtight and can withstand temperature extremes. If this is unavailable, you can always use an ordinary box. Place the box on a flat surface with one of the long sides facing up. Measure and mark 2 inches from the edge and all the way around the side, then cut away the cardboard inside the marked area, creating a framed opening in the long side of the box. Place glass over at the opening, tape it securely so that no air escapes, then turn it over so that the glass is at the bottom. This will be where the light source is placed.
The heat source can be anything that provides long, continuous heat. A heat lamp can be used so you can easily regulate the temperature. Place the socket on the cardboard side of the box away from the glass. Keep in mind that the socket should fit snugly so that there is minimum air interaction inside. The bulb should be placed near the edge of the box, not at the center. To keep your chicken incubator in constant heat, place a thermometer inside. Turn the box so that the glass side is facing you, while the cardboard side is behind.
Place the eggs inside the box then fill a pie tin with water and place it at the bottom of the box. The water maintains humidity. A wet-bulb barometer may be used to measure this. Next, switch on the bulb. After 3 or 5 hours, the temperature inside the box should be between 103 degrees and 106 degrees. If the thermometer reads below this level, this means that air is getting inside the box and you need to securely tape all openings of the egg incubator. Check the water inside the pan occasionally to ensure that it does not dry up.
Turning the eggs at least three times a day help in the chicks' development and it readjusts the chicks' positions. Do this in a way that there is minimum open-air interaction. There is a debate on whether is okay to turn and touch the eggs yourself. You may or may not do this, but it is completely all right if you do.
For the flooring, a material that works best is a wire grill. The egg won't be able to roll excessively and it makes it easier and accessible for cleaning.
Egg incubators provide a fun, easy way to egg production. Now that you have learned the basics in making your homemade chicken incubators, you are ready to hatch some eggs.
