My gerbil is three years old and I noticed last night his teeth are getting a bit long.
I feel like I am giving him enough to chew on, but he doesn't seem to be particularly interested any more. He is even lazy about building his nest, he didn't bother ripping up the kitchen towel, he just dragged it on top of the hay and slept underneath it.
He was cleaned out yesterday and get plenty of attention from me. He has been living alone for 4 months now after his brother died...another gerbil is not an option.
Your little one is tired, not lazy. Three years old is a great age for a gerbil. You have been raising him well. Please do not fault him for his lack of activity. My just over two year old mouse has slowed down considerably. It is very hard to watch.
In the States we have these bags of colored wood treats for the small animals. They are in the shape of pretzel twists or sticks. They are very good for maintaining the teeth. I break them into smaller, more manageable pieces for my mice. Since you first asked this Q in England, I am unsure if this product is available where you live. Are the wooden sticks you tried those flavored logs? Most of our animals like them, though the hamster is not a huge fan. Keep trying different small animal wood treats. You are sure to hit upon a favorite. Worst case, ask his vet what to do, because the teeth never stop growing.
