Even if there are many commercially manufactured toys for parrots, there is really no reason why you cannot make homemade parrot toys yourself, especially if you really do not have excess cash. In fact, you do not even need to tap your skills in handicrafts in making parrot toys because the things that are lying around in your house are good enough to be used in entertaining and exercising your bird's brain and body. Below are some of the bird toys you can use and make at home.
Simply giving your pet an unscented and organic toilet paper to chew on and shred apart is actually one of the most inexpensive homemade parrot toys available. Remember that most types of parrots need to shred and chew on at things in order to keep their beaks in tiptop condition. You can simply hang the roll of toilet paper inside the cage. However, make sure that your pets do not eat the roll. If you see that your companion parrot is starting to feed on the roll of paper, it is time to remove it. Cutting paper cups, straws and plates into pieces and hanging them inside the cage is also another option for an inexpensive homemade toy that your pet can play with.
Your pet will also need homemade parrot toys that can provide good exercise for its small claws. One of the things that you can do to help your pet bird with its clasping and grasping exercises is to make a small toy out of a table tennis ball. Just make a small hole through the ball and hang it in your pet's play stand or inside the cage. You can also be a little more creative in setting up the practice ball inside the cage to encourage your pet's inquisitiveness. Simply putting a cardboard box inside the cage can also be enough to catch the bird's curiosity. But it is important that you watch what your bird is doing so that it won't hurt itself or get sick buy eating the cardboard box.
If you have wooden clothespins, you can also use those to make homemade parrot toys. These pins are perfect for your parrot to chew on. However, please choose one that does not have metal springs, which can hurt your pet. Used shoestrings and knotted rag strips are also good toys. Just make sure that the string or the fabric is not frayed so as not to hurt the talons of your beloved bird. Also, you may want to wash the rag and the shoestring first before hanging it inside the cage.
