One of my favorite pastimes is watching birds in my yard. I love to sit by the window or in the porch swing to watch them. I have mostly blue jays, finches, sparrows, robins and doves. I notice the doves are always in pairs. Blue jays are loners while the finches and sparrows are always in a group and don't seem to be in pairs. The robins may arrive two to four at a time; usually not just one, but not in a bunch like the finches or sparrows. Once in a while there will be a red headed woodpecker. There are so many different kinds of birds that come and feed, that sooner or later you will see one that is not familiar. A good bird book is a handy reference to have. You will need bird feeders in order to attract birds.
There are basically five types of bird feeders to choose from: trays, hoppers, tube feeders, nectar and suet.
- Tray feeders tend to attract Juncos, doves, jays and sparrows. It is important to keep tray feeders full and the ground underneath clear of droppings. The down side of tray feeders is that they are open to the elements such as rain and snow. Squirrels find easy access to them. Fill your tray feeder with mixed seed and cracked corn.
- Hoppers tend to attract chickadees, cardinals and finches. They usually have a larger capacity and, therefore, you don't have to fill them as often. Hoppers keep out the rain and snow.
- Tube feeders keep food clean and dry and have perches for the birds to stand on while they get their food. They are usually made of plastic or glass and have holes in various places so a number of birds can stand on the perches and feed at the same time.
- Nectar feeders hold a sugar solution which attracts hummingbirds and orioles. They need regular cleaning to prevent fermentation of the sugar water. Sometimes it is hard to attract hummingbirds, but they will be back once they know where the feeder is. You can buy small plastic screens to place over the ports to keep bees and other insects away from the sugar mixture.
- Suet feeders consist of a wire cage with suet or a suet mixture. These feeders attract chickadees, nuthatches, jays and mockingbirds.
To protect your bird feeder from the elements, look for one with a roof which helps keep out the rain or snow and gives some protection from the sun. Squirrels seem to have knack at getting to the bird feeders. It's a good idea to place the feeder about five feet off of the ground and eight feet away from the trunk of a tree so they can't get to it. It helps to have your feeder close to bushes or a tree so the birds have protection. If you don't have branches from which to hang your feeder, try a Shepherd's Hook.
