Parrot owners have been drawn for generations to pet parrots from their mesmerizing feather colors, playful personalities, and high intelligence. Proper care of these magnificent birds in a home environment can be challenging at times, but with proper care, these birds can be wonderful and rewarding pets.
Parrot Diet
Because there are many varieties of pet parrots, different parrot breeds will require different types of care. Understandably, all parrot types will require proper nutrition and good quality of life, and lucky for us, most parrots' diets are pretty similar. Generally speaking, parrots will thrive on a variety of fruits and vegetables, parrot food or pellets, and a quality vitamin enriched parrot seed mixture. Your pets will also want fresh water every day.
Cage Maintenance
Birds as pets have had a reputation in the past as "dirty" pets to own. Some of this is true, as it is very important to keep their cages as clean as possible. Items in their cage such as the perches, food and water dishes, and other cage surfaces should be cleaned daily with a mild soap and water. Stay away from traditional household cleaners like ammonia, mold and mildew cleaners, and bleach. These chemicals can burn your pat's skin, eyes, and do damage to their respiratory system. You'll want to inspect their cages daily, looking for sharp points and other items metal that can do damage to your parrot.
You'll also want to take special consideration in sanitary conditions and cleanliness when handling your parrot. Owners should wash their hands frequently when petting or handling their birds, dishes, or preparing food and meals to help prevent bacteria and other infections. Interestingly enough, even human saliva contains bacteria natural to us but harmful to parrots, so be sure to never allow your parrot to place their beak in your nose or mouth.
Cage Size
Cage size is also crucial to your parrots' overall well being. After all, this is their new permanent home, and you'll want it to be as comfortable for your parrots as possible. General rule of thumb is that your parrot should be able to spread their wings within the cage with enough room for between two and four parrot toys.
Cage Location
Their cage should be placed in an area of the home where your family congregates and spends lots of time so they can interact with the bird. Kitchens don't tend to make ideal spots for the cage because of the proximity of harsh chemicals used while cooking and cleaning.
Parrot Grooming
When you think of proper parrot care, generally grooming doesn't seem to come to mind. These birds to require a certain amount of grooming throughout their life, as their nails and beaks never stop growing. Both the nails and beak can be clipped every 3-4 weeks. Overgrown nails tend to get caught on perches and toys, and can create significant damage to their claws if this happens. Many other owners clip their parrots' wings every 3-4 weeks to prevent flight.
In the wild, parrots are able to bathe in the rain to keep their feathers in good condition, but when in captivity, owners can bathe or mist their parrots daily with clean and fresh water from a spray bottle.
Parrots are very playful and affectionate animals, and require proper care to maintain the best and healthiest relationship. Proper parrot care will help your pet thrive in any home environment.
