My son is growing up fast and at 2 years old will start to develop interests which I hope will include electric toy trains, because then I have a really good excuse to play more with my trains, but are they safe for our kids?
Until recently everything he touched went into his mouth for testing and fortunately he has passed that age now, but it is very common for kids to do this and as there are many small sharp places on electric toy trains I would not recommend that you let them play with them.
There are very safe toys, including plastic trains designed by some of the bigger companies that are perfect for small kits, but electric toy trains are not one of them.
So at what age does it become safe for kids to be left unsupervised with model trains?
Well take the following into account:
An N scale locomotive is about the size of a small mouse; An HO locomotive is bigger about the size of a rat; O gauge is about the size of a small cat; G gauge is roughly the size of a medium dog.
Bigger means they can't choke on it although there maybe parts that they can get injured on. Young kids like to bang things as they develop and experiment. You really do not want them to grab hold of your expensive electric toy trains and smash them off the wall.
What is a hammer and toy to them, is a collectors item to you, so you should make sure that they only have access to the correct toys for them. Before you buy any kind of electric toy trains for your kids consider the following points:
The Age of The Child: Is the child at an age of understanding or are they still at the age where everything goes in their mouth? Do they appreciate their other toys or do they still smash everything up?
The Child's Nature: Do they look after their toys, share them with others, put them away after use or do they still use everything like a battering ram? Harder plastic toys may be better for the tougher kid.
Skill of the Child: Is the child building structures already or have skills and experience and an appreciation for what they are playing with or are they still struggling with basic toys?
Is the Child a Thrower: Does your child throw everything they get in their hands? If you buy them a metal train set will they damage, the model, the furniture or themselves or do they like to calmly play on the floor with their toys?
Other Kids: Do you have kids of different ages? If you have a 12 year old kid and a 3 year old kid around, they will be drawn to each other. The older child may appreciate the model, but the younger on may not yet.
Pets and Animals: do you have pets and animals? Cats love to chase fast moving objects and your gleaming new electric toy train maybe the next victim of the pounce.
How Will They Use Them: Will your trains be laid out in a permanent structure or will they put it away after each use. O scale is good for regular movement, but smaller scales such as HO, N and Z scale may get damaged.
Space: Do you have space for a bigger model or will you need to go small?
Budget: How much do you want to spend on something that may only be a passing phase? If the kids are older and have a real interest, you may be willing to spend more.
When deciding about electric toy trains for our kids, as wonderful as we may think they are, we should be honest about their abilities. It is for their own good. It is fantastic for us to encourage them to join our passion, but we must always consider their safety.
