Rosemary herb is one of the best kinds of herbs to grow. It serves many purposes including culinary, medicinal, and decorative purposes. It is used to add flavor to most dishes and its aroma serves as a stimulant. In addition, the rosemary herb bears clusters of small blue flowers during spring which makes rosemary very attractive hedges for your home. Further, rosemary oil can be extracted from it which is used in liniments and perfumes. Rosemary herb is native to the Mediterranean. It is an evergreen bush that belongs to the family of Lamiaceae. It goes by the Latin name Rosmarinus Officinalis which means "dew of the sea". It is so beneficial that you simply have to grow and care for them yourself at home.
Here's how you can grow rosemary herb:
o Choose the right location
Before you start growing them, think of the best location. If you are living in an area wherein you don't experience frost, you may grow your herbs in the ground especially in your herb or vegetable garden. However, if your place experiences winter, you better grow your rosemary in pots or containers. You have to use a sandy, well draining soil and see to it that they get six to eight hours of sunlight.
o Plant the right parts
They are grown through cuttings. You can do this by cutting approximately two inches from the soft new growth of a matured rosemary herb. Remove the leaves at the bottom and dip in a rooting hormone. Then place the dipped end in a container with a well draining starting mix and place the container in an area away from direct sunlight. Once roots appear in the cuttings, you can now transplant them to other containers or in your garden.
Now that you have grown your rosemary, it is time you learn how to take care of it. Taking care of them is very easy and it won't eat up most of your time.
Here are some useful tips to help you take care of your rosemary herb:
o Water regularly
Just like with other herbs, it needs sufficient amount of water. Make sure it gets the amount of water it needs by watering your rosemary at least twice a week. Be very careful not to overwater your herb. You can easily tell if you do so since leaves will begin to yellow. In addition, make sure your herb does not dry out by checking the moisture of its soil from time to time.
o Provide enough sun
If you want your rosemary herb to grow leafy and healthy, you have to make sure it gets six to eight hours of sun exposure every day. During winter, you have to keep them indoors but they still require the same amount of sun. In cases wherein it is too cloudy or cold, you may use artificial lights to warm your herb.
o Look out for pests
Keep them protected against harmful pets by applying very little amount of insecticides, especially those which don't contain too much chemicals. Remove pests immediately before they start spreading.
