Must I split his tongue?
I have an Indian minah bird (just over a year) and although he does say hello and whistles beautifully, I have been told that I must split??? his tongue in order for him to talk properly. Is this true? And who does this kind of thing? (I picked him up after his nest was destroyed by builders - he was still a pink featherless little fellow).
Absolutely NOT! I had never heard of such cruelty as this until I read your post. I did a very quick search and found the following material, which I have excerpted for you:
“There was an early superstition that if the bird's tongue were split at the tip with a silver sixpence ground to a knife edge, then it would talk better”.
Your friend's theory is nothing but a very old (and I see now a very stubborn) primitive superstition. There is no scientific basis to justify doing this, and it is an abominable act of cruelty. You should visit the site below and learn about how humans have always been fascinated by bird species' ability to talk. This talent has always been mysterious to us, and shrouded in such mystery, it is not at all surprising that prior to having access to science (in the modern-day sense) we humans would come up with such nonsense. The Romans used to actually eat the tongues of African Grey Parrots thinking this would enable them to speak foreign languages. Let's hope we have advanced from such lunacy and abject cruelty in THIS day and age. Love and cherish your little friend. Take care of him, for he loves you. He is your most ardent supporter!
