What are some good cockatiel toys?
Homemade ones or store-bought ones? I might be going to the pet store later today to get my bird some more toys. I feel bad for him because he only has a toy with a bell on it (but whenever he uses it I get mad because he sticks his beak in the bell and chirps my eardrums off!), a swinging perch that he never uses, a hanging decoration that is a sandal (it is like 1 or 2 inches big), and then his two perches.
So what are some good toys to get him? That he would actually play with or use in anyway? I tried putting a shoe box in there for a bird house, but I would have to cram everything in there making it cramped, he hated being inside the box, and he was scared of it and didnt want to be put back in the cage.
I let him out almost everyday or whenever I have the freetime to watch him. I am mostly on my computer so I have a lot of freetime, haha.
Also, some good treats?
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Cockatiels love shredding things so toys that allow them to shred things apart seem to work great. Many of the plastic toys sold in pet stores seem to be better for parakeets, my cockatiels have always preferred the kind of toys they can pull apart. Also toys with wood or rawhide seem to be a hit. I find these at my local pet stores or you can look for them various places online.
Some "homemade" toys that my current cockatiel loves are shredded paper - make sure it does not have ink on it, tissues, paper towels, or napkins also work; q-tips - my bird carries it around in his beak and rips the cotton stuff off; a mirror - although he loves looking at himself I don't put this in the cage he only has it when out of the cage so he doesn't get too bonded with his reflection; toothpicks - he likes to pick them apart; Chinese finger traps (you put your index fingers in the ends and when you pull they get stuck) - I found some at my local craft store only $1 for 6 of them and he loves shredding them apart. These ideas that are all pretty inexpensive. However, most of the time I give him those toys outside of the cage so i can supervise.
Also it's a good idea to have a cuttlebone in the cage, again you can find these at almost any petstore, they seem to enjoy picking at them and it provides nutrients and is good for their beaks.
As for treats, millet spray is always a hit, so are sunflower seeds, any dried fruit (my cockatiel really loves banana chips), and nuts but only in small amounts.
Hope you find some fun stuff for your little birdie
