The reason why this article is called Reptile shedding is because snakes aren't the only reptiles out there that perform the moulting process. Read on lets talk about moulting and all the hardships that snakes and other animals have to deal with.
Though snakes are obviously the most famous animals to shed their skin other animals also have to shed their skin. There are 4 major types of reptiles. Lizards turtles snakes and crocodiles. Each one sheds its skin differently
Lizards shed their skin in sections. Often you can see rips on their back and if you do then don't worry your pet lizard is fine it will be back to normal soon enough. Crocodiles also shed their skin but they are covered in large scales and each scale sheds individually. Turtles differ in how they shed their skin. Some shed the outer parts of their shells while others simply grow extra layers and most grow layers of skin on their underside.
Also just to throw in a random fact scientists believe that dinosaurs shed their skin like crocodiles since crocodiles are the biggest family of reptiles. However since dinosaurs were so big it is perfectly reasonable to believe they shed their skin completely differently but since skin is quick to rot we have no evidence one way or other.
Snakes have the most famous skin shedding process. The number of times they do it differ mostly the age and species of the snake. Older snakes will only shed their skin 4 times a year while younger snakes might shed their skin twice as many times as that.
There are ancient legends of snakes and how they are immortal for every time they die they shed their skin and become young again. Though this is of course wrong it is to tell where the legend came from. Before they shed their skin there eyes become dull gray and blue. their skin also obviously becomes dull. This gave the impression that they were dying until they shed their skin.
As there eyes dull their vision becomes impaired. Since their vision is impaired they become violent. So in other words if you believe a snake is shedding don't go petting it. A snake also stops eating before it sheds it skin. An unhealthy snake will shed its skin in pieces and a healthy snake will shed its skin in one piece. This could come from a variety of reasons from malnutrition to humidity levels.
The shedding process in whole takes around 4 or 2 weeks. The first 1 or 2 weeks is just inactivity and there eyes will dull here then the next 1 or 2 weeks they will be shedding. They search for any rough surface they can find often picking a log or branch. They will first rub their head against it to dislodge the skin there and also to scrape off the skin nose to make a hole. They will then try to find holes with rough edges to try to keep the skin in place as they get out of it.
