Quaker Parrot Questions & a little help please ?
I have had Quakers before..and am an experienced bird owner for many years. I have a Quaker baby 8 months old.. got him at 6 mo. He is incredible with speech already, mimicking and has a condo..lol. he goes in and out of his cage on his own.. lots of toys, and attention and is an awesome bird..
But I have never had a bird like him. I think he is TOO SMART.. he loves untying things. I have alot of balls on strings and other toys.. which he spends an hour loosening the knots and dropping them on the floor ..and he will do this all day to every toy..so I tried shoe laces... he does it to them.. I tried plastic ties..he can do it to them..
and then after he destroys the cage... he is loud and crazy.. for hours..
Is this normal behavior and what can I get Bobble to keep him happy and stimulated ..he seems to get bored quick.
Thanks.
he has clipped wings too.
There is no such thing as too smart. It just sounds like you have a very happy bird. Yes, that inquisitive behavior is totally normal for a healthy happy bird. A lot of people don't realize it but in the wild, Quakers are weaver birds. They make some of the most elaborate, multi roomed homes, and some even have front porches. Provide him with things he can weave and you may be amazed. Give him things like a package of plastic drinking straws that you can pick up at the dollar store. Pieces of clean cotton cord and twine, pieces of vegetable tanned leather, pieces of clean cotton material. The only down side of this behavior is he may very well build a really elaborate "nest" which will be threaded through the cage bars, making it harder to clean. But in my opinion, the joy they get from being able to exercise this natural instinct is well worth any problems it may cause.
