A toy car collides with a lounge chair!?
Help me out with this!
A 150g toy car collides with a padded lounge chair at 1.20m/s. The collision takes 0.3s. The toy car stops after the collision.
a) Calculate the impulse the car applies to the lounge.
The formula for impulse is I=Ft... So like, what's the F? F=ma, but what is the acceleration? Is it deceleration cause the toy car comes to a stop after the collision..?
b) Calculate the impulse the lounge applies to the car.
:/
c) Calculate the average force the car applies to the lounge.
Alright, I've spent a long long time trying to figure these questions out, but I just can't. I'll appreciate any help at all!! Thanks!
Impulse acted on a body =change in the momentum of body
Ft= mV1 -mV2
v1= initial velocity of car =1.2
v2= final velocity of car= zero
Ft= mV1
=.15*1.2=.18newton sec
average force=impulse/time
.18/.3=.6 newton
See if u want to find by the acceleration method then in this case u have to take it as a deceleration i.e= v/t= -1.2/.3
= -4m/s^2
Impulse that act on car is .18newton sec
But two impulses act on the chair:-
1)during collision when there is sudden increase of speed of chair to 1.2 m/s
2)during deceleration when speed of both car and chair comes to zero
So we can say even though two impulses of magnitude 0.18Nsec acted on the chair on the but sum total of impulse acted on the chair is zero
