Parrot wont play with his toys.?

just adopted a conure a few months ago, but won't play with any of the toys I have bought for him.

A few questions first:

Which species of conure do you have? Some are much smaller than others, and having toys that are too big for him might make him uninterested in them, or possibly afraid of them.

Which leads me to my next question! Does he appear to be afraid of the toys? Does he try to get away if you put them close to him?

And finally, what KINDS of toys are there? Are there mostly chewing toys, or mostly "learning" puzzle toys would you say?

The biggest reason I find that parrots don't play with new toys is that they are afraid of them. Parrots are prey animals in the wild, so by nature they're very cautious. Some birds throw caution to the wind and attack new toys immediately while others will stare at the toy for weeks sometimes trying to decide if the toy is going to eat them.

Another reason that he might not play with them is that they might be either too big or too small for him. That's something you can find out by introducing either larger or smaller toys and seeing if they make a difference.

Ways to get around the toy rejection are to show him that these toys are meant to be played with. One of the things I have to do EVERY time I get my Senegal, Devastator, a new toy is let him watch me while I play with it first. If I put a toy in or on his cage without letting him watch me play with it first, he'll avoid it like the plague. He's not the only parrot I've ever encountered with that tendency, either.

Another important thing to remember is that he might want you to play with him! Make sure that he's getting plenty of time outside of his cage to play with you and exercise.

Beyond that, you should also hop on Google and research your parrot species to make sure you're covering all of your bases. Another great thing to do is to join a parrot forum and ask if anyone else has this problem, and what they did to get around it.

Because it's been a few months, I'm doubting that your parrot is sick but as a precaution you should probably keep an eye out for any symptoms of illness as well. Just in case.
