Need Help Finding a Book?

I'm trying to locate a book I read when I was a kid. I remember parts of the plot, but am unable to recall the title. The book has 3 main characters, all girls. I think 2 of the names were Nat (possibly Nate) and Pat or Patty. The plat was something along the lines of, Nat had some sort of brain rupture and reverts back to a child like state. The book basically follows the friendship of the 3 girls. I think at one point in the book there's a part about the 3rd girl (who's name I can't remember) and Nate sitting in Nate's room. The Unnamed girl is knitting and has a ball of yarn that, when unraveled, reveals small prizes and toys. I know this isn't much information to go on, but if anyone can tell me the name of this book I'd appreciate it! I think the title may have had the word Goodnight or Goodbye in it as well. Thanks!
