Poodles are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world. But unfortunately, the breed has a few faults. Or at least some breeders seem to think so.

Tinkering with Mother Nature

There's nothing wrong with selectively cross-breeding dogs. In fact, this is how we have gotten ALL of the various breeds we have today. Breeders, past and present, choose the best aspects of a particular breed and try to match it to a certain job.

Here's a great example of how this works:

Dachshunds were developed with a particular goal and job in mind. They were bred to be "ratters."

To catch and kill rats, a dog (or other animal) need to be able to go where the rats go: down holes, under floors, up into walls.

So breeder selected the best traits to accomplish these tasks. You didn't think the long body and short, stubby legs happened purely by chance, did you? It's the perfect body to accomplish this important task.

With better building techniques, better hygiene and better extermination methods, dachshunds have mostly been made redundant and are now favorite family dogs. Some of the same features that made them good as vermin hunters -- small size, friendly personality, intelligence -- make them wonderful pets.

The Best of All Worlds

In the past few years, as working dogs are needed less and less, the focus of cross-breeding has become more on developing the traits that make a dog into a good family pet. That's part of the reason poodle mixes are becoming so popular. They are usually bouncy, affectionate and full of energy. They are also usually pretty small, so they appeal to apartment dwellers and families with small children.

Appearance

Appearance depends upon the breed that the poodle has been crossed with. But generally they will have the wavy coat like the poodle. However, unlike the poodle which is always one solid color, poodle mixes can inherit coat patterns of other breeds and be many various colors.

One popular mix is poodle and terriers. This seems to produce very family friendly, loyal and beautiful dogs. If you are in the market for an excellent, friendly, intelligent dog for your family, consider a poodle mix.
