What is a good tropical bird/parrot type to start off with?
I currently have two cockatiels, but I am really looking to buy another bird. There is a black headed caique at the petstore that I am absolutely in love with, he is the sweetest thing. That is the kind of bird I am hoping to buy next.
So, which type of bird would be good for someone who has only had cockatiels but wants to advance?
I am looking for a bird that has much more personality and options than a cockatiel.
First of all, I recommend that you buy ANY bird from either a rescue organization, independant breeder, or animal shelter. These birds need your help MUCH more than the pet store birds do. Plus, animals in pet stores are bought from VERY unclean places and sometimes have diseases. They also cost much more than what they should. By buying from pet stores you are contributing to a world of abuse and uneducated workers!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZDBnuvx2BE and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTPJaez6Wp8 will show you what I mean.
ANYWAYS...
I have a black-headed caique and he is incredible. I highly recommend them, and since you have already had experience working with birds, a caique would be a step up (a rather large step up, in the grand scheme of things). Their biggest fall-back is their stubborness... If he's chewing on something he shouldn't be, and I tell him, "No" and go to pick him up, he will growl at me and try to fight for a minute. They do NOT like being corrected. They are also very human-territorial (meaning, they will attack anyone that upsets you) and are not good with strangers at all. My caique will actually fly across the room at anyone who opens the door and will bite until he draws blood, then bite ME when I try to get him off. Most of them are hard-wired to be like this for some reason. Yet another reason why you should buy from a breeder... You can watch the baby grow up and handle him so that he's completely used to you.
Some caiques also prefer one sex over the other. Mine prefers women, but that doesn't stop him from biting them. He was incredibly nice to me the first day I brought him home, but my poor boyfriend went through 2 days of severe gashes in his hands before Bandit finally accepted the fact that he couldn't win. Just some other considerations
But really, the good outweighs the bad in these guys and they are VERY rewarding little gems! Good luck with yours. Also, conures are another great step up from cockatiels and are less stubborn than the aforementioned caiques. More family-friendly, so to say. But just as fun.
