My chickens have hatched a brood! Any tips?
We have six fully hatched and three more pipping. We are taking them away from the mother because I frankly don't trust the roo or the other hens and the nest boxes are all at least 18'' off the ground.
I've got them in a box with a heat lamp shining on one side, they're on newspaper currently, with chick feed spread on it, a feeder with chick feed and a waterer (I've been dipping their beaks in the water and they are starting to learn how to drink on their own).
Any other tips? Does anyone know how to sex buff orpingtons at this age? Or will I just have to wait... Thanks!
Feed them Turkey Starter. It has a lot of protein that growing chicks need. The temperature should be about 90-95 degrees and about 1-2 feet above them. You can tell if they are hot or cold if they are avoiding it or cluttering around it. Use a chicken water bin or use a bowl with rocks in it. Make sure they cannot get in and drown. As they get older you can start switching them gradually to regular diet. At around 3+ weeks they will need scratch in their diet to prevent digestive problems. Each week you will gradually drop the temperature 5 degrees (you can lift the light higher or use a temperature sense that turns the light off when it is too hot like I do) until they have grown in more feathers and are able to care for themselves properly. Make sure that you use bedding, preferably shavings. Switch it out a lot, they poop tons.
