When golfers sit around the clubhouse and talk about the greatest golf swing, one of the names that always comes up is Ernie Els. This pro golfer has what many consider to be the perfect golf swing. It is poetry in motion...fluid, strong, graceful and, most importantly, effective. Let's take a look at why Ernie Els golf swing is so good and what we can learn from him to improve our golf swing.
1. The first thing to do is to address the ball properly. With feet approximately shoulder width apart, form a line to your target using the tips of your right and left feet and a point about 25 yards down the fairway. Align these points with the flag or the spot on the fairway you want to land. As you start your backswing, visualize what your shot is going to look like and where it is going
2. Secondly, be conscious of your grip. Hold the club as you would a small bird; gently but firmly. Avoid the crushing grip that many amateurs have. This isn't a contest between you and the club about who has the harder grip. This is about keeping your grip loose enough to allow for plenty of free swing and fluidity.
3. Thirdly, a smooth backswing should lead into a down swing of even tempo and rhythm. Always take a full swing through the ball for better control. Consciously avoid the urge to "crush" the ball. It's true that occasionally you will connect on those hard swings and the ball will fly long and far. But most of the time you will end up with a shot that is way off target and shorter than you would like. Remember to let the club do the work.
4. Lastly, keep your head down and watch the ball as the club hits it. Then keep your head down as you follow through past your shoulders. Then you can lift your head to see where the ball is.
Achieving a golf swing like Ernie Els takes a commitment. Take every opportunity to practice your swing at the driving range or even in your yard with wiffle balls. The more you begin to make your swing automatic, the better you will play.
