how do i know if my rats nails are too long?
im a first time rat owner. i have two 13 week old male rats which i bought from 'pets at home'. as it is my first time owning rats, how long should their nails be. they look ok to me, and they've got a stone and some bird toys with wood on, so they can scratch on them.
i really want to be able to get both of my rats out, but one of them is really nervous. whenever i try to stroke him, he runs away. ive tried giving him food, but nothing works. my other rat is fine, and he has been out everyday since i got them both. he will jump out of the cage when i open the door, and he will lick my finger when i put it through the bars of the cage.
id appriciate the advice of someone who has owned rats before or anyone who knows things about rats.

As long as they have the stone or something that simulates natural surfaces encountered in the wild, then the length should be fine. I have a small brick slab right in front of their water bottle so they will get many filings a day as they hurry up, drink water, scamper to explore, oh thirsty again, drink water, up the ladder, eat, drink some water. lol, anyway, you get the picture.
As for the shy guy, there is no telling what potentially awful things have caused him to be so scared so above all, be patient with him. One of my first rats was scared of his own tail practically. Try sitting near the cage where your presence is known but not threatening to where he feels he needs to scamper off to hide. Offer your hand to him by laying your hand pretty close to him but not necessarily trying to touch him yet. Get him used to you being in their living space so that he doesn't think the world is ending when you come around to hang out with your boys. I have also found that talking to them constantly is really helpful to getting them used to you.
