Advice on my battery hen who wont perch?
ADVICE PLEASE!! I have had my 3 battery hens for about 2 months and they still will not perch. I put them to bed every night on the perch and hope they stay? They are up and keen to get out of bedroom (locked up from foxes) in the moring so i never know. the perch is a roundish piece of wood around 7cm thick. Also one of them has a bald backside (since being in cages) and is REALLY red it hasnt cleared up at all. The others are ok any sugestions please??
Not perching is not a huge problem. As long as they have the option to perch if they wish, there is nothing to worry about. Check for mites in the baldpatch and check the other hen isn't pecking her. If there are not mites, see if it clears up in a month or so. If it doesn't, see a vet. If there are mites, get some antimite powder, dust bath her, the other hen and thoroughly clean the house, exposing it to bright sunlight for at least an hour before dusting it with antimite.
If the other hen is pecking her, you can get a special formula that stops it. Ask your vet.
EDIT: One more thing, get a smaller perch as that's too thick.
