My finches won't go in the wooden nest box I got them, but they'd go in the stick one that I got them. The wood one is hanging off the cage.

I used open "canary" pan nests for my Bengalese finches because I didn't realise they liked the wicker ones. They hatched several broods of babies and you could hold a mirror above to "check on progress" which was lovely to see.
Without knowing how big your cage is at the moment its hard to say if you should get a taller one? Try not to disturb them too much by checking too often whatever you do.
