Whether you are a novice or have been making wreaths for years, wreaths are pretty easy to assemble once you get a feel for the basics. If you want to make a decoration for your gate or front door, over the fireplace, or as part of the holiday season, here are many ideas to get you started creating a beautiful wreath for your home.
Harvest
Harvest wreaths celebrate the season by using gourds, apples, seed pods, brightly colored leaves and dried corn. Using a pre-made base made of straw as a foundation will help you to quickly create a harvest wreath.
Christmas
Elegant holiday wreaths can be made by attaching red bows, tree ornaments, dried roses and cinnamon sticks to a straw base covered with silk garland.
Evergreen
A wreath of evergreen can be adorned with plastic red applies, berries and a bow. Or you could use silk fruit and foliage and small tree ornaments in red and green colors.
Victorian
Wrap lace around an evergreen base and add small horns, toy alphabet blocks, small pine cones and berries topped off by a Victorian-style doll wired onto the wreath.
Dried Flowers
Build a large fragrant floral decoration using simple materials such as dried flowers, baby's breath and eucalyptus. Add seed heads, grasses and herbs for accessories that are fragrant as well as beautiful. Or cover a small moss base with sheet moss for extra fullness. Then add bright flowers by wiring them on.
Pine Cones
Pine cones make great wreaths, and the design possibilities are endless because they come in so many sizes, shapes and varieties.
One pine cone decoration example would be to use a variety of cones, nuts and seed pods in making a wreath. Then tuck in a small bird in a nest.
Another variation would be to make a wreath from pine cones, then accent it with cotton husks, gum tree balls and acorns for a totally "green" design.
Tip: Dip the pine cones in water to remove dirt and bugs before using them. Then, to melt the resin, bake the cones at 200 degrees for 30 minutes.
After your nature wreath is finished, spray the it with clear lacquer.
Basic Wreath Making
Most of the ideas above all use a purchased base for the wreath. You can purchase straw wreaths, twig wreaths, evergreen wreaths and more at your local craft store. Other supplies needed are floral wire, wire cutters, scissors, hot glue and glue gun. With these basic tools and one of the ideas for a wreath above, you can create your own wreath in a short amount of time.
