Cages for finches is a topic that you should consider before you make the decision of buying your finches. The home that you choose for your finches is just as important as the type of finch specie that you choose to adopt. It is common for some aspiring pet owners to buy the pet first before deciding what housing is most appropriate. We would do the opposite when dealing with finches: research and prepare the cages before the finches arrive, so you have fewer headaches later on. The good news is that finding the right housing for finches isn't necessarily difficult or expensive. The following are a few important tips to note.

It is vital that you carefully consider your finches' accommodation. Do not fail to take into consideration that flying is an important part of who finches are. Finches can fly for many hours without tiring. So when choosing a cage, don't buy the smallest cage you can find just because the birds are only four inches long (many finches exceed this size upon full maturity).

You can take certain steps towards ensuring affordable accommodations for your finch. You can choose to use a mid-range cage which offers suitable accommodations for your finch without forcing you to tear down the walls of your home in a bid to make an aviary.

Finches cannot be bred in small or confined cages. You will therefore need to ensure that their cage is large enough to permit the natural flow of courtship and mating behavior. In truth, most finches will not act naturally unless they enclosure is large enough. With a large cage, finches will be able to go about their tasks as they would in a natural environment.

There are alternatives that you can consider. If you find that you are unable to afford a large enough cage and you still wish to breed finches, then it is best if you limit your choices to Zebra and Gouldian finches. Zebra and lady Gouldian finches can be bread in outdoor enclosures. They can also be bred within large indoor cages. Although it is possible to keep other species indoors, they are far less likely to breed in these conditions.

In order for finches to breed properly, there are several things that must occur. "Breeding" can only be described as successful if a continuous cycle of mating, egg production and the rearing of young chicks is maintained. Female finches that lay eggs cannot be described as being successful breeders. Some female finches lay their eggs and then proceed to destroy or cannibalize them. This tends to happen when the cage is a little too small or the finch has not yet adapted to its new environment.

16 in. x 16 in. x 20 in is the minimum required breeding cage for people who wish to breed lady Gouldian and zebra finches. Working with an even larger one would be better. With a cage sporting the dimensions 16 in. x 16 in. x 20 in, you will not be able to hold more than 2 finches in it at a time. If you plan on breeding more than two finches, you will need to get more cages of similar dimensions. Of course, the best option would be to build a large aviary if you can afford it.
