Ferret Food In Bulk?
When I get my ferret I'm going to give them 3 foods. Zupreem, 8 in 1 ULTIMATE and nutro kitten food. Are these good choices? Also, I live in canada and I was looking at theferretstore.com and I saw a bag of Zupreem, 30lb's, $45 which is a great price because at Petsmart they charge 29.99 for an 8lb bag. I dont they ship to canada and if the do, there shipping prices are probably HIGH. Like at ferret.com, there prices are really low but it cost $30 shipping plus 1.30/lb and duty. All the 'good' ferret stores are in the Us. Are there any good online ones in canada that I can order off of? Please answer my questions!!! Thank you sooooo much!!
I used to mix "Purina Kitten Chow" with "Shepards and Greens Premium Ferret Food". Was all my ferret would take, but she thrived off of it, and I found her feces did not smell as much as with the "Kaytee brand 8 in 1 Ferret Food", but her coat was pretty oily. I also tried the Ultimate brand briefly with another ferret I had, and it seemed to keep his coat nice, but his feces stuck a little more. Though that easily could have been due to him being male.
When you are buying pet foods though, to get the full nutrients out of the bag, the size of bag you buy should be according to how much they consume. A bag should last you no more than a month, and it's best to buy as close to the date made as possible.
Here is what you should look for in ferret food:
It is best if meat is the first on the ingredients list. If there are two or more meat products in the top five than it is a high quality food.
Watch for food that list corn high on the ingredient list. Corn has little protein and is hard for ferrets to diegest.
There should be between 32 to 40% protein and 18-22% fat.
Go easy on fiber (causes smelly stools) and ash. Ash content below 7% - to reduce the risk of developing stones in urinary tract.
Look for taurine, keeps heart healthy and its eyes clear.
Also introduce young ferrets to a large variety of foods at a young age, they are finicky eaters. And don't be surprised if they refuse what you try to feed them - just ease them into the new food by mixing it with the old brand.
